Your 578. On 26th January H.M.S.MOORHEN was ordered to Macao with instructions to watch situation and keep me informed. Captain reports that the work on boundary which was the original cause of friction with Chinese has been stopped pending attempt to settle question. Local Authorities nervous of out- break on part of pirates and other bad characters collected in Macao but hitherto no disturbances have taken pla00, The Chinese who left Macao in consider- able numbers are said to be returning. Food boycott established by Chinese soldiers mainly affects Chinese. Arrangements have been made to embark British subjects in event of serious disturbances arising.
